#ShameOnIndiaToday forces India Today to apologise for derogatory article on Deepika Padukone

Twitter began trending #ShameOnIndiaToday after the media group published and shared a video on its Facebook Page. The video created by YouTube Channel Fame Fashion asked Indian men, ‘Which Celebrity Would They Like To Have A One Night Stand With?’ But India Today’s Facebook page shared the article titled, ‘Video: Deepika Padukone or Kim Kardashian who’s your choice for a one night stand?’
However, good sense prevailed in the office of India Today following the outrage! Not only the Facebook link was deleted and the article taken offline, they have now issued an unconditional apology and accepted their mistake.
The headline now reads, “Dear readers, we made a mistake. We are sorry”; with the following contents: “A fame fashion YouTube video run on Wonderwoman.in was promoted on this page. The language and the idea were against everything that we stand for. We sincerely apologise to all our readers. The content has been removed and with that, the persons responsible. Thank you.”
Just on Thursday (March 26), Times Now‘s #ShamedinSydney campaign backfired to #ShameOnTimesNowfollowing their extreme and unnecessary criticism on Indian Cricket Team’s loss in ICC World Cup 2015 semi-final. The timing of India Today’s writer sharing the video was not only reckless but also shambolic when observed through lens of journalism ethics.
Our article said, “What is wrong with India Today just posting a video, you may question. We feel that the video and their Facebook post is not asking for an opinion but simply an act of hypocrisy from an organisation that is believed to be a watchdog of the society! Both India Today Group and the video creators, Fame Fashion channel run by LivFame must share the blame.”
As a writer/journalist, I’m are thoroughly content with India Today Group’s apology to stick to their Journalism basics! All in all, we must hail the power of Twitter for being a guardian of the fourth pillar.
