7 lessons we learnt about depression from Deepika
India is among the most depressed countries in the world. At a rate of 36%, as recorded by World Health Organisation, it has the highest rate of depressed people recorded anywhere across the globe. Not to forget that it also has the highest suicide rate in the world too.
The reason that depression is now being talked about openly, is because of Bollywood actor Deepika Padukone, who dared to tell the world about her battle with depression. This issue will no longer be skirted around!
First up, depression is just another ailment. And that's one of the many things we learnt about depression from Deepika Padukone's TV interview. Here are some other interesting insights:
1) Don't be ashamed of it. Depression can happen to anyone of us.
2) Don't think about "log kya kahenge". Accept depression, talk about it and increase awareness.
3) Don't keep it inside you. Talk about what you are going through to people close to you. Be it your family, friends or partner.
4) (This is for the family members and friends) Don't dismiss the talk. When your closed one confides in you about her inner struggles, don't sweep it under the rug and reject it as some attention seeking move or mood swings. Hear them out and help them through.
5) Depression is not sadness. Sadness is a part of human existence and it's good.
6) Depression is just another ailment. It is not a weakness or madness. Just like you can have a physical ailment, there can be mental ailment too.
7) Don't hesitate, seek help. It is ok to go to a psychiatrist. A professional help will only enhance your life in a positive way. So go out and open up about what's bothering you inside.
Yes, there is a certain stigma attached to depression in our society but why let it be? It's time we shun all the unnecessary embarrassment when it comes to talking about depression or mental health.
