Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan’s ‘Piku’ teaser: Why we loved it
"Piku, ayiii Piku," Amitabh Bachchan hollers at the end of the teaser for Shoojit Sircar's latest film Piku. And makes legions of Bengalis outside Calcutta slightly homesick for the disgruntled Bengali father chasing you over a staggering phone bill, or the mother trying to make sure you don't miss lunch at home.
The plot of the Madras Cafe director's new film has been kept tightly under the wraps. All we know is, Amitabh Bachchan plays Deepika Padukone's father. Also, considering the film has been shot extensively in Kolkata, it's probably about the duo who also live in Kolkata.
Bachchan, from the looks of the teaser, plays a Bengali father who isn't easily pleased. Deepika, plays his rebellious daughter.
It begins with Deepika saying that the 'Trailer is just perfect." Bachchan, her father doesn't seem to agree. In a heavily Bengali accented English, he voices his objection to the 'trailer'. "Promotion karega. Hamari family ka pura baat bahar nikal jayega toh?" Bachchan, asks in the trailer. While you can see he has put a lot of effort in perfecting the curious 'Bengali Hindi', a Bengali would know that he misses a few words extensively distorted, errm, Bengalified by the speakers of the language.
Bachchan is also spotted with a copy of 'Kathamrita', a book on Ramkrishna's teachings popular with the older generation of Bengalis.
While the father and daughter are sparring over a 'trailer', the teaser cuts to Irrfan Khan who seems to suggest that these fights are pretty regular.
